If not the best Spartan, certainly a discussion of the best MSU laxers this year would include Haley Schmucker, who might be headed for a breakout year in 2016. The Spartans were lucky enough to land this former Division III player who brings a wealth of speed and talent to make Michigan State start daydreaming about post-season opportunities. The speedy midfielder joins WCLL All-Conference junior MacKenzie Meyer and freshman Megan Lilly to form one of the the best midlines in the WCLL. Schmucker played for Bryn Myrn College before coming back to East Lansing, where she spent her freshman year. “Haley can flat out ‘play.’ She’s smart, knows where to go and plays really tough defense. She’s a great addition to our team, but mostly, she’s just a great young lady,” said Greg Normand, MSU’s head coach. Schmucker will be asked to score more than she has in the past, but Normand believes she’s a natural scorer. “I am not sure anybody has ever really turned her loose offensively, but if she can gain the confidence, she’ll be one of our best scorers because of her speed,” he said. “She’s just a great addition to this program and we’re lucky to have her. Can anybody say All-American? ” |
